Kyphosis, hunchback posture and walking aids

The medical term for a rounded or hunchback posture is kyphosis. Excessive curvature can cause pain, breathing restriction and reduced upright mobility. Long term use of rollators, Zimmer frames and crutches can worsen forward flexion.

It should not be this hard for disabled people to get the equipment they need. What makes it worse is that when equipment finally arrives, it is often outdated and unsuitable. Wheelchairs and scooters provide freedom, but when used alone without a walking plan, they also stop people walking.

I support wheelchairs and scooters, but they must be part of a rehabilitation pathway. If we stop someone walking, we remove circulation, strength, independence and mental wellbeing.

People deserve better. Walking matters. When supported correctly, many people can walk more than they ever believed possible.
